Faience in the true sense — the hand-glazed, satin-surfaced art tile Mosaic built its name on, color laid in by hand and pooled within the modeled outlines. A soft, stony blue-grey ground deepens to a streaked cobalt panel, and against it a single baby chick glows in warm mustard-gold, drawn in heavy dark relief lines that read almost like cloisonné. Mosaic Tile Company of Zanesville, Ohio, founded 1894 by Karl Langenbeck and Herman Mueller; the faience line introduced 1918; Frederick Hurten Rhead worked in its studios in the early 1920s. Marked on reverse; 4 x 4 inches; crisp relief, rich hand-laid color, satin faience surface intact. A figural faience tile from the artistic top of the company’s output.
