Description

A bearded old man fills the field in high relief, worked deep enough to throw real shadow through the hair and beard — some have identified the face as Michelangelo. A soft mottled transmutation glaze runs tan and blush into deeper brown, with a heavy all-over crackle. Marked TRENT on the reverse. Trent Tile Company, Trenton, New Jersey (1882 onward), known for figural relief modeled under the influence of Isaac Broome. A true 6 x 6 in centerpiece; period crackle; edge loss at one corner from removal; intact, no breaks through the face.
