Description
A stunning complete fireplace surround by the American Encaustic Tiling Company (AETCO) of Zanesville, Ohio. High-relief majolica tiles depicting swallows in flight, cattails, lotus blossoms, and botanical motifs in a rich oxblood brown glaze.
The Surround
This is a complete fireplace surround — all tiles present and accounted for. The relief work is extraordinary: each tile is deeply modeled with naturalistic scenes rendered in the highest quality American majolica. Swallows dive through cattail marshes, lotus flowers bloom in full relief, and botanical elements frame the entire composition.
The Glaze
The oxblood brown glaze is characteristic of AETCO’s finest majolica production. It pools in the deep recesses of the relief and catches warm highlights on the raised surfaces, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow that changes throughout the day.
The Maker
The American Encaustic Tiling Company was the largest tile manufacturer in the world at its peak. Their majolica production represents the pinnacle of American art tile.
