The American Encaustic Tiling Company was founded in 1875 and grew to become the largest tile manufacturer in the world. Based in Zanesville, Ohio — a city so rich in ceramic production it earned the nickname “Clay City” — AETCO produced everything from utilitarian floor tiles to the most ambitious decorative work attempted by any American manufacturer.
