In the tiled salons of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, heat was an art form — fired in clay, glazed in jewel tones, and set into monumental stoves. This large-format ceramic tile, purchased in Bratislava (then Pressburg) in 1990 and made decades earlier, carries a deep evergreen glaze, the relief alive with curling leaves and pinecones — a motif long tied to abundance and protection. Approx. 9 x 8 3/8 in; historic kiln-fired construction; excellent condition for age with minimal edge wear. An exceptional survivor of Austro-Hungarian ceramic artistry.
