Antique Cast Iron Fireplace Summer Cover — Diana the Huntress, Polychrome Relief

Description

Cast iron fireplace summer cover with a central figural relief depicting Diana the Huntress. The figure is shown mid-stride in classical drapery, one arm raised to the shoulder, accompanied by a stag at lower right and two birds in flight above. The relief is finished in polychrome — rose and gold drapery, green foliage, cobalt birds — set within a gilded Rococo cartouche of C-scrolls, laurel, and ribbon motifs. The piece retains its complete black cast surround, with a bead-and-ivy border across the top rail and fleur-de-lis panels on the stiles.

Summer covers were fitted over the coal-grate opening of a fireplace during the warmer months. A genuine period cover of this kind dates to roughly 1870–1910.
