Antique AETCO Art Nouveau Allegory Figural Panel — 18 in, c.1890

Description

A rare figural panel produced circa 1890 by the American Encaustic Tile Company, surviving as a complete eighteen-inch, one-piece architectural tile — a format so fragile it was never likely to endure. The surface is finished in a luminous cocoa-rose-sepia glaze, warm and atmospheric, with gentle pooling in the recesses. A winged putto drifts through the composition as butterflies scatter through flowering forms — an Art Nouveau allegory of transience, youth, and the briefness of pleasure. Tiles of this length and relief depth were structurally vulnerable, most produced as two- or three-section panels; this example was fired and installed as one uninterrupted 18-inch tile. The reverse bears the original AETCO backmark, Zanesville, Ohio. Excellent antique condition with original period craquelure; intact and uncut.
