The Tile
The relief is remarkably deep, with figures nearly fully modeled in the round. The rich Rockingham-style brown glaze pools in the recesses and catches light on the high points of each figure, creating dramatic contrast. Every face, every limb, every strand of the goat’s beard is individually articulated.
The Maker
Back-stamped: THE HAMILTON TILE WORKS CO. HAMILTON OHIO. Hamilton operated from the 1880s through the early 1900s, producing some of the finest American majolica tiles of the period. Their figural work is among the most sought-after in the field.
