Deep hand-laid color, the true faience Mosaic was known for — a rich cobalt and near-black ground broken by a checkered tan-and-brown border, with a nude putto astride a goat left in creamy white lifting forward off the dark field. The figure-on-goat traditionally represents Capricorn, the goat of the zodiac — a Renaissance-revival scene composed like a small artwork. Mosaic Tile Company of Zanesville, Ohio (founded 1894); faience line introduced 1918. Marked on reverse; 4 x 4 inches; crisp relief, deep hand-laid color, satin faience surface.
